[Question] No appetite and very little weight loss after a month on paleo… any suggestions?

by on / Paleo Diet

Hello all,

When I was in high school, my family ate paleo, and my parents lost a ton of weight on it. I didn’t notice too much of a change, but I had a lot of other stuff going on, and was already pretty active (high level dance classes for multiple hours most nights, etc.), so I just assumed I was continuing to be healthy. However, eight years later, and I have decided to go back to eating paleo after being unable to in college due to dining hall options, and having gained weight from college and some medications (which I am no longer on).

I started on Ash Wednesday (it’s for Lent, but I plan on sticking to it after Easter as well), and now after a month of strict paleo, I feel awful. I broke out in a horrible full-body rash the second week, assumed it was because of food allergies (I have oral allergy syndrome, a severe almond allergy, and I’m celiac), and tried to avoid whatever the potential trigger foods were. However, midway through that second week I completely lost my appetite, and I haven’t regained it. It’s to the point where the sight, smell, or idea of food makes me nauseous, and no matter what I try to eat I struggle to keep it down. I’m drinking plenty of water every day, but can’t eat more than a handful of cashews or a small piece of chicken in a day. I’ve been drinking coconut milk to try and keep the fat intake up, but even that makes me feel sick after more than one glass in a day.

On top of all of that, I have a horrible taste in my mouth, and I seem to be burning easily in the sun, which wasn’t really the case before. My father was always so pleased at how much more sun he could tolerate when eating paleo, being someone who burned easily, so I was shocked at this. I’ve also only lost 6 pounds this month, which is the standard amount my weight usually fluctuates over the course of a month. Finally, I’ve noticed that I’m experiencing more depressive dips than I have in a while, even though so many people rave about the positive effects of paleo on mental health.

I’ve been adhering to the paleo diet entirely, or as much as I can without being able to eat much. The closest I’ve come to a “cheat” food was a piece of 70% dark chocolate, in an attempt to get my stomach to accept food, but other than that one instance I’ve been trying to eat eggs, nuts, fish, chicken, beef, bananas, grapefruit, and all of the vegetables I’m not allergic to. I made paleo animal crackers with coconut flour, a bit of honey, cinnamon, and eggs, and even those I’ve been struggling to eat. Again, I’m really only eating at max the equivalent of a cup of food a day, always something that is paleo, and I am drinking tons of water. My caloric intake is obviously very low, and although my energy levels are usually pretty good during the day, after 5:30 they tend to drop to the point where I’m taking multiple naps before just going to bed at 10 PM. I don’t hit the gym regularly, but there’s a lot of walking involved with my job, so I know I’m getting a few miles in every day, as well as a ton of stairs. I do take a Vitamin D supplement every morning, as well as a multivitamin, so I’m sure that’s helping me some, but I would like my nutrients to come from food I’m able to eat!

Does anyone have any suggestions to get some of my appetite back? I know that calorie reduction can help with weight loss, but I’m sure that under 300 calories a day for almost a month is just not good. Also, any ideas on what could be causing the horrible taste in my mouth? (I’m a 23 year old female)

[Question] Strict diet gaining weight

by on / Paleo Diet

Hi guys I’m a little stuck and was hoping to get some input from my fellow redditors. I’ll start with my question, then give a brief history of my nutrition successes/failures.

I just finished a Whole30 and my issue is that I can’t lose weight. A few stats:

35 M 6’2"

SW: 226 (this is the day I started Whole30)

CW: 228

Starting body comp (bodpod): 26% body fat (58 pound fat, 167 pound lean)

I think I’m reasonably strong and have a decent amount of lean mass, just can’t seem to lose fat.

Back Squat: 405 lb

Flat Bench: 300 lb

Deadlift: 500 lb

I currently crossfit 3 days a week and run 3-5 miles 1-2 times per week.

Some brief history:

I switched to a paleo way of eating about 7 years ago and lost about 15 pounds over about 2 months. At that point I was pretty lean (I’d estimate about 10-15% body fat), weighing around 190-200 lbs. I was very happy with my physique, energy, and strength. I was slightly less strong than I am now, but not markedly so. I slowly regained weight over the next 5 or so years up to where I am now. I normally stick to a mostly paleo way of eating with a focus on meat and fat as my main calorie sources. I never had to count calories to lose weight initially. I do enjoy wine and craft beer and I figured this was the main source of my extra calories and weight gain. However, over the last 3 months I have severely limited alcohol from averaging 20 or so drinks a week now to about 5-10. Over the last 30 days I consumed no alcohol (doing a strict whole30) and still didn’t lose any weight. To be honest the whole 30 was pretty much how I eat anyway minus the etoh. Just to cut out the obvious stuff I am not making gluten free crackers, nut butters, or fruit the focus of my whole 30 diet. I’m mostly eating meat and vegetables with some squash and sweet potatoes on workout days. Quite frustrating.

Is this just me getting old? Any tips on where to go from here? I know that if I do a calorie restricted diet I can lose weight in the short term but I’m looking for something I can stick to for the rest of my life. I plan to get another bod pod done in November to see if my ratios have changed at all.

Thanks for reading.

Wife is 3 months Paleo and has weight gain/no energy, I need diet advice for her.

by on / Paleo Diet

I’m asking this for my fiance, she has been doing a semi-strict paleo diet for a bit over 3 months and at first (like the first month) but she has put on about 15 pounds around her stomach and I’m kind of worried about her, she also takes a lot of naps and sweats at night so we barely get intimate anymore. She does really well until the mid afternoon generally but then she just crashes and I barely even see her the rest of the day.

I’m an 8 year strict vegan personally but I respect her choices and know that it isn’t for her and am mainly just wondering how we can adjust what she eats to fix this, she eats a lot of steak, ribs, bacon, potatoes, etc mostly normal stuff but she does cheat once a week and eats dairy but other than that she follows the rules pretty much. She heavily dislikes fish but likes chicken and is meh towards turkey. She doesn’t care much for vegetables but eats broccoli when I make it for her. She does have some health issues and is diabetic and early signs of heart disease as she was about 250lb’s when we met but I forced her to excersize with me a few times a week and quit fast food and she managed to get down to 190 over the last year when she first went paleo but is now up to 205. I didn’t fall in love with her over looks btw, we fell in love because we could talk for hours and had similar interests and it just happened lol.

I love her a ton and I want to marry and grow old with her but she always says she is tired and I’ve caught her drinking soda pop on multiple occasions recently and she says she does it for the caffeine… I heard sweet potatoes are paleo and I like them as well so I cook them for her but she says she doesn’t like them and only ate 3 bites so I’m back to square one. She will eat half a cup of broccoli if I add butter to hers but if I don’t she hates it. I’ve tried getting her to help me cook but she hates cooking and has always preferred frozen dinners as well as fast food and ordering pizza but I told her I won’t allow anything like that in the house and I knew she hates veggies and would never go vegan so she said she’d go paleo if I cooked everything which is fine.

It’s getting to where I don’t think she has her heart into being healthy despite me trying my best to make it easy for her, so if anyone has some paleo recipes that she would like the taste of please help me, I’m literally begging you all honestly! I literally just made a profile on her to ask this and despite how much I love and care about her I have limits which hurts to say but it’s true.

Thank you all for reading!

[Other] Looking for advice/ suggestions/ inspiration/ and success stories from anyone who has beaten inflammatory illnesses, IBS, GORD, bloat, weight gain, etc with Paleo diet (+/- supplements). Cracked it! Thanks everyone :-)

by on / Paleo Diet

As the headline suggests, I’ve cracked it with western medicine and the normal western diet. There’s something horribly wrong with how we live, how we eat, how we exercise.

I used to be a tiny stick of a person, some weight I gained was good weight, but since then I’ve gained 20kg in the last 4-6 years (it’s yo-yo’d a bit) and am now a solid 15-20kg over my goal healthy weight, with a lot of fat around my tummy and thighs. I am constantly bloated so bad I look 9 months pregnant and sometimes get congratulated by strangers on my pregnancy/ upcoming baby. I’m. Not. Pregnant.

Over the years I’ve had numerous blood test, CT scans, colonoscopy, gastroscopy x2, ultrasounds. I’ve seen various specialists, costing me hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Not ever has anyone found anything wrong except inflammation- I’ve now been diagnosed with gastritis and reflux, recurrent sinusitis, recurrent cystitis, IBS, PCOS. Aka, lots of inflammation. But no cause of it- no immune problems, nothing. Blood tests all normal. I’ve been tried on various medications over the years- antibiotics (many times), birth control, ibs meds, anti-histamines (yet I’m not allergic to anything??), cortico-steroids, anti-depressants, anti-psychotics, medications for acid-reflux/ proton pump inhibitors). None of them have completely resolved the symptoms, it’s only gotten worse and worse and worse.

I went to a new GP wanting help with the above and walked away with THREE referrals (to doctors working in specialities that I’ve already been through), more tests (that I’ve already done many times) and TWO new suggestions for MORE MEDICATIONS (which I refused).

I am young. I’m in the prime of my life. There is nothing actually wrong with me, every test is normal except they show inflammation of unknown cause. I’m not lactose or glucose intolerant, yet I’ve tried restricting both to no success, I’ve tried low-FODMAP, I’ve tried low-carb. I’m on FIVE regular medications (including a low-dose antibiotic that I’ve been on for months) plus have to regularly use other medications to treat symptoms that arise. I have had a congested and blocked nose for years despite surgery.

This Is Not Right

What the HELL is this? How can any doctor or any sane person think this is normal for a young, healthy, woman?

I’ve CRACKED IT. I want CHANGE. I want to be WELL. I want a flat belly, not a giant baby belly. I want to breathe through my nose.

This is madness!

So I’m going paleo, starting tomorrow. No “weaning into it”. Grains, dairy, legumes- they’re all out.

I’m also going to try a high-quality probiotic, probably a HCL supplement. I’m hoping to see a naturopath very soon and am prepared to pay the cost- I just want to be WELL again.

I’m posting because I’m desperate, frustrated, scared, alone, and I don’t know anyone who has symptoms like mine, or who has found wellness with paleo, or seen improvement. I don’t even know anyone who eats paleo. I’ve tried telling people I want to try paleo and they start going on about how it’s “complete nonsense” and “we’ve evolved to eat grains now”, and “cavemen mostly starved and died at the age of 30 so it’s hardly a good lifestyle choice” and “you can’t just cut out entire food groups and expect to get better, you’ll miss out on important nutrition”.

It’s bumming me out. My partner is supportive but sceptical, he’s seen me try low-carb and low-fodmap, neither of which helped (in-fact on low-carb I kept crying cos I was so damn hungry no matter how much I ate).

So I just wanted some support, some words of encouragement and advice, and most desperately of all: success stories.

Please, if you’ve had a chronic illness/ annoying symptoms and paleo helped or eliminated those problems please let me know, I’d love to hear about it!

[Discussion] Orthorexia and Primal Lifestyle

by on / Paleo Diet

I have a history of eating disorders. Currently, I’m struggling with orthorexia… and I can’t tell if the Primal lifestyle is making it worse or better. Honestly, I just want to feel good and energized… I really don’t give a shit about how I look. I just want to be healthy and fit. I want to optimize my health so I can be the best that I can be. I work on ski patrol through the winter, so my days are long, strenuous, and cold… And food is a real problem. I’ve tried therapy, doesn’t work for me – So I turn to reddit for help.

Basically, I don’t eat enough. Tracking my calories, I’m only getting 1,600-1,800kcals a day – there’s no way that’s enough, especially considering my day to day expenditures. As a result, I binge. It’s been worse in the past, but it happens on a weekly basis now. I fixate on meal time – three meals a day, spaced 4-5 hours apart, within a 10-12 hour eating window. Every time I break from this schedule, I binge. Or I feel like I somehow failed or broke from my high fat, low carb, no processed lifestyle.

I eat basically the same things every day and I’m growing more and more anxious about breaking from that list of “approved” or “clean” foods. I’m hungry often, but only when I’m not busy or distracted – when I’m alone, I binge. When I’m busy, I don’t. And honestly, I don’t feel hungry when I’m busy, so obviously there’s an emotional factor at play that just adds fuel to the fire. I should also add that I have no problems with gluten or grain or dairy – my very recent ancestors hail from northwestern Europe and Great Britain, and grain was a major part of their lifestyle. But after researching the subject, I feel that the evidence against grain is pretty substantial, making it worth the cut. I often crave pizza and bread and cookies. Even so, I have not broken from the no-grain rule I’ve set for myself, even in binges. Binges usually consist of nuts, nut butters, dark chocolate, full fat cheese, mayo, and salami – and even looking at my binges, I’m only totaling out calorie-wise at 3,000-4,000kcals for the day, which is much closer to what I need for what I’m doing in my day. Logically, my binges are probably the only thing keeping me fueled. But the emotional impacts of stuffing 2,500+kcals in my face at once and waking up bloated and uncomfortable make it unsustainable.

I know that the answer is eating more and being more diverse in my food choices – but for whatever reason, I’m fixated on the idea that breaking from high fat, low carb, no processed food even once is going to fuck over my health overall. Has anyone dealt with a similar issue…? And does anyone have any ideas for how to deal with this? Basic steps? I feel like I’m on the verge of breaking through, because I understand what is happening to me. And I understand what the fix is. But I have no idea how to get there. Any comments or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks, and sorry for the diatribe.

[QUESTION] Food allergies & intolerances – getting desperate

by on / Paleo Diet

Hey guys and girls,

I have a question concerning my girlfriend. 3 years ago she was diagnosed with several food allergies:

  • gluten
  • milk
  • eggs
  • tomatoes
  • zucchini
  • pumpkin
  • banana
  • chocolate

Now she has been diagnosed with an acid-base balance that’s completely out of whack (kidneys, cardiovascular, …) which causes severe headaches, nauseau, stress, … and another huge list of foods she can’t eat has been added:

  • Cheese (she could still eat cheese from goats & sheep before)
  • Nuts (all of ’m)
  • Legumes (lentils, chickpeas, peas, …)
  • Maize
  • Meat (all of it)
  • Most fish (only fatty fish is okay, like salmon)
  • Lobster
  • Prawns
  • Alcohol
  • Fructose
  • Honey
  • Tilapia
  • Rice
  • All soy products
  • Beans
  • A lot of fruits
    • Strawberries
    • Mango
    • Apple
    • Cranberry
    • Pineapple
    • Pears
    • Prunes
    • Berries
  • Nuts & seeds
  • Rhubarb
  • Meat replacements

Aditionally there’s:

  • Several E-numbers (conservation numbers)
  • Several enzymes

So long story short: it’s fucking insane. We’re both absolute foodies so we just went out yesterday and got absolutely hammered on wodka & weed because it’s fucking depressing. I knew we’d have to adapt our diets again, but I can’t handle this at the moment. Tasty food is life for us and we’re both fucking pissed off and depressed that we can’t eat any of this food anymore. (well, she can’t but I’m eating the same as she does to support her)

Please send recipes :’( The only things I’m finding online is shitty, bland and boring food. We got around her previous allergies by cooking loads of asian inspired food, but since she can’t eat meat/soy/rice anymore, that cuisine gets thrown out, too. We’re going camping for the next 3 weeks so I’m looking for suggestions for easy meals we could cook on the go (because I’m 100% certain I can’t show up in a restaurant with this list, it’s absolutely ridiculous)

P.S. we’ll see a professional after our holidays, but we’d need some recipes to get us through the next 2-4 weeks. Every little thing helps!

P.P.S. nobody knows a site or an app where you can enter all your allergies & intolerances and it churns out recipes you CAN eat?

[Question] My moms in the hospital and I’m stress eating everything in sight.

by on / Paleo Diet

It’s been a week long situation, VERY stressful and possibly life threatening. I feel silly posting this as it’s not a priority, my mom is, but she is sedated and I’m just sitting here wanting to eat even more so figured I’d vent-post. I’ve been doing Paleo pretty good for almost a month now, but this week it changed and I’m not responding correctly. I’ve had a few slip ups this week eating little pieces of cake or something once a day, but overall calories were moderately low, I avoided eating bread or pasta, so not the end of the world. Once moms back at home and ok, I’d sigh the ship, no problem. Well, that may not happen or at least not anytime soon and today the floodgates opened. I’ve eaten everything I can find and it’s ALL been junk food. Donuts, chips, candy bars, yogurt, pudding, fried chicken, Chinese food, egg rolls, chow mien noodles, chic-fil-a sandwich (hey it was free) cookies, pastries, lemon bars, coconut bars, custard pie, popcorn, 6 cups of coffee with heavy cream, steak, all in all I’d bet I’ve eaten about 10 thousand calories of pure junk and that may be a low estimate. I kid you not, It was non stop eating of crap all day long, from 5AM on. Whats scary is that I didn’t even realize it until now, after dinner. It’s like all I was doing was trying to pacify the mind to not scream while I’m stuck in this building, and my mind tricked me into not realizing what I was doing. (thats not an excuse, just trying to explain I didn’t even see what I was doing, I was blind to my own actions like it was involuntary, which of course it isn’t.) I’ve had a minor issue with food in the past where I would, sometimes, emotionally eat SOME ice-cream ( a coffee mug amount) , or SOME chips (a cereal bowl worth) , once in a great while when life got REALLY out of hand. But I never ate ALL the food, at once, as much as I can stuff in my face for 12 hours non stop like I did today. I kept it all together for my family but lost it diet wise. I tried to go walk 2 miles and just felt gross so quit after 1. This is concerning, embarrassing, adds to the stress level and quite unlike me to this severity. The odd thing is, I never got full. I’m still not full and could eat more. I know this won’t fix the reality of the situation before me but it’s not helping and my actions aren’t my normal self.

Brussel Sprouts, red pepper and cilantro

by on / Paleo Diet

I always get questions about brussel sprouts recipes. I guess because there are only so many ways to make brussels, right? Here one way I make them, Brussel Sprouts, red pepper, cilantro, and a few other ingredients. It’s super easy!

Brussel Sprouts with Red pepper and cilantro

On a quick side note. For people who live in Covington or Mandeville, bacobar has the BEST brussel sprouts. Like I’m obsessed. If someone can tell me what’s in their recipe, I promise I will buy you dinner.

This week I’ve had a lot on my mind.. Nothing new there. But one thing I want to share is this quote/mantra I’ve sat with. “Inspiration will find you working.” I don’t know where I saw this. It’s so simple but it means a lot to me. Sometimes without a clear goal in mind, I have trouble finding motivation. I think we all deal with this sometimes. But what I have to remember is if I just continue to work the inspiration will find me. All we have to do is show up. Work without question. And let the answers come to us, in time.

Medical school is a long journey. 4 years undergrad, 4 years medical school, +4-8 years of residency. We’re looking at 12-16 years of training “before you can do what you want.” I’m learning to love the journey. I get to help deliver  babies, scrub into interesting surgeries, and take it all in. Maybe I don’t have the freedom I want yet, and I’m still paying them not the other way around haha. But trusting the journey is all I can do. Even when it get’s hard.

Brussel Sprouts with Red pepper and cilantro

In third year, finally I have time to do some things I love! Like see my friends and family, workout more, cook some new things, and explore my city. I can’t complain. What kind of posts do you want more of? Comment below.

Spaghetti Amatraciana

by on / Paleo Diet

Confession. This is my first real pasta post. Another confession. This will NOT be my last. I present, an amazing dish, Spaghetti Amatraciana.

In June I went to Italy with a group of friends to celebrate finishing our second year of medical school and taking our first round of boards. We flew into Rome. We spent half the trip in Rome, and half on the Amalfi coast in a little town called Atrani. My heart was SO full and my belly too. With pasta, wine, seafood, and gelato of course! OH oh and cannolis.

Healthy right? Well the Italians say they do eat pasta every day, but not like in America. Smaller portions, less sauce. They also start every morning with a croissant and a cappacino. A hearty breakfast. And one I could get used too.

I went to a cooking class in Rome, specifically to learn how to make pasta. Let me start by saying they make it look easy. It was easy when we had chefs guiding us and helping us get the dough to the right consistency. Since then I have made pasta 3 times at home. It has not been easy and when I master it I will let you know. This recipe I used a gluten free brown rice pasta that came out delicious. I suggest you do the same unless you’re a pasta genius/chef already!
amatraciano 1

I know it’s all “eat pray love” of me to fall in love with Italy… But I have no shame. I hope to visit Italy so many more times in my life. Rome had a romantic vibe that I couldn’t get enough of. Every street a new adventure and a new site to see. One afternoon we even heard a woman practicing opera outside of her window. That was a moment to remember.

The coast was so beautiful. And you know it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world when the next week the Kardashians and other celebrities are visiting the very spot we boated to. We stayed in Atrani, but made our way to Amalfi, Positano, Ravello, and Capri. Each spot had a different charm. I was glad we stayed in Atrani, it felt like we were locals for a few days. Their world revolves around good food. I don’t think Italians go a day without an excellent meal. I’d like to live my life the same.

Now a little bit about this recipe. This dish is called Spaghetti Amatraciana. The Italians said this is a splurge meal for them, because they don’t traditionally eat fatty meats every night. But I think it’s worth a try to impress yourself, or maybe cook for a friend or significant other. It may look like regular spaghetti, but it’s got a kick to it and the red sauce has the flavors of the fatty pork. So good. I made it once with pork belly and once with pork cheeks or jowl, aka guanciale. Traditionally Amatriciano is made with Guanciale. I found it at Rouse’s for you locals. I couldn’t find it at Whole Foods, but they do have pork belly.

With all out on the table, no I don’t eat Paleo anymore. I should write a post on it… maybe called “breaking up with paleo.” I just was sick of following food rules. And I looked at people like my grandparents who are in their mid to late 80s, thriving for their age, eating a very healthy diet without strict food rules, and I just didn’t think I needed it. I learned how to eat healthy, love vegetables, listen to body and find the balance of eating well. More on this to come if you’re interested.

Enjoy this Spaghetti Amatraciana!! Comment below with your thoughts.

Write a review

  1. 1 lb pork jowl
  2. 1 cup dry white wine (I use Sauvignon Blanc)
  3. 28 oz tomato puree
  4. 1-2 TB red pepper flakes, to taste
  5. Salt and pepper, to taste
  6. 14 oz brown rice pasta
  7. Parmesan, optional for topping
  1. Cut the pork jowl into ½ inch pieces.
  2. Place in a large pot over medium-high heat. Cooking until almost crispy.
  3. Add dry white wine. Allow liquid to evaporate for about 10 minutes. Stirring frequently.
  4. Add tomato puree, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper. Continue stirring and allow flavors to incorporate.
  5. In the meantime, boil a separate pot of water. Add salt. Place your pasta in the water once it is at a boil. It may only take 3-5 minutes, if you want your pasta al dente.
  6. Serve hot!!
  1. For the brown rice pasta I used a brand called Tinkyada. It was delicious!
